A Note about Health Savings Accounts

It is vital to save receipts for medical expenses. Qualified medical expenses do not need to be reimbursed from a Health Savings Account (HSA) in same year that expense was incurred or paid. Health Savings Accounts can be left to grow tax deferred; distributions can be delayed to future years. Be sure to save accumulated receipts to match up with future distributions.

It is also helpful to keep in mind that typically HSA contributions must cease once one begins to participate in Medicare. The HSA can continue to hold balances, but generally new contributions are not allowed.
